She Persisted

She never fit the mold they made
She never knew her place
She knew that she was so much more
Than just a pretty face
She chose to live her life out loud
While others just existed
Others might have given in
But not her, she persisted

Inside she had a heart of gold
That didn’t make her weak
The harsh world all around her
Made her angry, made her speak
She couldn’t be a timid soul
Although the world insisted
She could have simply bit her tongue
But not her, she persisted

She could have sat there in the back
And never said a word
Kept her thoughts inside her head
Where no one ever heard
And yielded to the status quo
The one no one resisted
And given up, without a fight
But not her, she persisted

Reflections

Looking in a mirror
Reflecting on my youth
At all lines the miles have left
On this lonely road to truth
Memories of days gone by
The good ones and the bad
Remind me of the losses
And all the love I've had
Wondering how I got this far
Much closer to the end
Alone here in this empty room
And trying to pretend
I somehow made a difference
Some way to ease my mind
Searching for some purpose
That seems so hard to find
Tomorrow brings a new day
A chance to find some light
To chase the doubts inside in this heart
That find me every night
Sing a song for The Pretender
Still trying to believe
There is some rhyme or reason
In this tapestry I weave

Too Much Time

I've got too much time here to myself
Too many thoughts inside
Afraid someone will see the things
I try so hard to hide
Too many hours to reflect
On where it all went wrong
Too many nights spent listening
To that same old sad song
Regrets and perfect hindsight
Work hard to bring me down
And I question all the reasons
That  still keep me around
Cursed with a good memory
That holds on to a past
Where life was built on promises
That had no chance to last
Never thought that this far down the line
I'd be here on my own
With too much time to think about
The reasons I'm alone

True Love (I Corinthians 13)

If I had the voice of angels
Resounding as a gong
I could never tell love's story
I could never sing that song
With faith that could move mountains
And a life to be admired
Without love, my vessel's empty
Nothing left to be desired
Love is kind and it is patient
And real love can never die
It won't fade like old love letters
That make a tired heart cry
Passion burns inside the soul
But fades and slips away
While love survives the strongest storms
Inside the heart to stay
No grave can hold eternal love
Love lives long after death
Inside the grieving hearts and stays
Until our final breath
In the eyes of newborn children
On the wings of heaven's doves
Few things will last forever
But none as great as love

Time To Go Home (For Daddy)

Your work here is over
And you've fought the good fight
You looked past the darkness
You walked in the light
You're tired and you're weary
You'll no longer roam
A son of the Father
It's time to go home

A shepherd to many
A father to me
Always a beacon
That shone on life's sea
A life lived for others
You've passed every test
So, lay down your burdens
It's time now to rest

The angels are calling
Your name in a song
Cast off any sorrow
You suffered too long
To the arms of the Father
No longer to roam
You'll live in our hearts
But it's time to go home

Musings of an Old Fool

I've been drifting for too long now
I've been thinking far too much
I've been hiding behind blue eyes
I've been longing for the touch
Of one who asks for nothing
But sees into my soul
An angel from another life
To come and make me whole
Passion without effort
Comfort with no end
A smiling, sweet companion
A lover and a friend
But love is such a young man's game
For innocents and fools
I squandered all my chances
And played by my on rules
I've lost too many times now
To try and shift the blame
Too old to try and start again
Too old to play the game
So, I will turn to other things
Diversions in my head
Ignoring my reality
And live in dreams instead

Getting By

I heard Warren singing Soulshine
And I struggled to my feet
Burdened by all life can bring
Feeling all but beat
I've been hunting four leaf clovers
And counting lucky stars
Remembering old lovers
And counting all the scars
Lost in those old memories
I let life slip away
Afraid that I will fall again
I lose another day
But tomorrow brings a new day
Another second chance
Time to get off of the sidelines
And get back to the dance
Where music eases all the pain
If only for one night
For now, I'll close these tired eyes
And wait for morning's light
