Hunger No More

Sweet child of this world
You’ve known only pain
You starve for attention
This world’s greatest shame
Sad eyed innocent
Skin over bone
Dying in a world
Of riches unknown

Does nobody wonder
What you’re dying for
Just close your brown eyes
And hunger no more

Senators, businessmen
Come join the feast
Stuff yourselves silly
Don’t look to the east
With mansions of glory
And nice things to wear
Don’t spend your time thinking
Of others out there

Does nobody wonder
What they’re dying for
Close your eyes and pretend
They will hunger no more

Brothers and Sisters
Who make up the whole
Union of souls
Accept your own role
Stand up and be heard
Let them know that you care
With the wealth we’ve been given
We must surely all share

The children are dying
They are mine and they’re yours
Is it only a dream
That they’ll hunger no more

The Truth

The truth reveals itself at times
And isn’t always kind
So, we lock those feelings deep inside
Afraid of what we’ll find
Because everyone’s a sinner
And everyone’s a saint
And everyone’s an artist
With the portraits that they paint
A picture filled with hope and dreams
A piece of captured youth
That ages with the painted lines
Revealed by time and truth
But the child survives inside each soul
No matter how we try
To lock away the pain of truth
We forget how to cry
And lose that childlike innocence
The joyfulness of youth
And all the burdens life can bring
Obscure all that is truth

Autumn

The days are getting shorter
The nights are getting cold
Stifled by my memories
And fears of growing old
The leaves are changing colors
The weather’s changing me
The pain is getting stronger
And it’s easier to see
The end is drawing nearer
But I am unafraid
To linger any longer
Isn’t worth what must be paid
The soul sees many changes
As the seasons roll on by
So, you stop in search of reasons
Why you’re willing to still try
For winter will soon be here
And your story will be told
When the warmth inside you passes
Giving way to dark and cold

Gospel Truth

I can’t bring back the dead
Or give sight to the blind
The only truth that I know
Is “you’ve got to be kind”
I won’t hang from your cross
And my blood is not wine
       No sweet sacrament
No fruit of the vine
I don’t walk on water
For the river is dry
So Father, forgive me
And Mother, don’t cry
Sweet sisters and brothers
Why are you looking above
When hidden inside you
Is the secret to love
It’s not in your scriptures
Or the stories you’ve told
Not stored in some vault
With your treasures of gold
Put all your commandments
Away on some shelf
Try loving your neighbor
As much as yourself

Note to Self

In times like these I need someone
Who sees all that I see
So in my darkest hours
I always turn to me
The only things I find are real
Are from my point of view
The universe inside me
Is really nothing new
It has lived for generations
And seen the pain of war
Yet still I am a dreamer
Who hopes for so much more
I have my friends and family
But the truth is plain to see
When I search for truth and meaning
I always turn to me

A Dream for Humanity

A bit more understanding
A lot less hate and greed
A little more attention
To those who are in need
The end of needless hunger
For those who do without
A world where we all live as one
Is what I dream about
Where every weapon is put down
And wars forever cease
Where foes embrace their enemies
And build a lasting peace
I dream of faith that lies within
Its truth found in the soul
Of every pilgrim searching
For their own place or role
Unfettered by religion
Or by some rules of state
Where how we live our daily lives
Determines our own fate
For what we do is who we are
And in the starlight’s gleam
We are children in this garden
Who try to live the dream

Lost

I’ve been listening for your footsteps
I’ve been waiting for your call
I’ve spent far too many mornings
Sitting staring at this wall
The one I built between us
That cannot be torn down
So, I walk these empty hallways
But you’re nowhere to be found
There are shadows in each doorway
There are echoes in my head
And the memories of someone
Or something long since dead
I’ve been chasing endless rainbows
Looking for that pot of gold
But I always find them empty
I’m alone, so lost and cold
I’ve been playing all those sad songs
I’ve been longing for a friend
Not that far from where I started
So much closer to the end

Bruises and Lumps

Life is a series
Of bruises and lumps
A long, winding road
Filled with wrong turns and bumps
The maps are outdated
Left behind by the last
Who traveled before us
With clues from the past
Following footsteps
Of pilgrims before
In search of their Mecca
On some foreign shore
Searching for freedom
They bravely set sail
Knights on some mission
In a quest for their grail
We stand on a bridge
But nobody jumps
Wounded and bleeding
From the bruises and lumps

Morning Funk

My heart is filled with sadness
My eyes are filled with tears
From witnessing the madness
I seen through all these years
I’m hardened by the coldness
The human heart can hold
Sickened by their boldness
And quickly growing old
Compassion is a dying art
And no one seems to care
The world has somehow lost its heart
And no one wants to share
So, my heart is slowly breaking
From these thoughts inside my head
It’s a feeling I’m not shaking
I may just give up instead

Mama

You gave to me the gift of life
The first that you would give
You taught me how to read and write
And showed me how to live
I learned from your example
What we were meant to be
Your strength and loving kindness
Were passed along to me
We’ve stood beside each other
In the sunshine and the rain
Through every tribulation
We shared the joy and pain
The best friend my entire life
You’re all that I could want
My steadfast, strong foundation
My lifelong confidant
And every time I turn to you
I always seem to see
Deep inside your loving heart
That you still carry me

Battlefield

As it was in the beginning
And is until this day
There’s always been a battle
It’s just the human’s way
Brother against brother
Drowning in the flood
Dying isn’t noble
Wine is turned to blood

Chorus
It’s just another battlefield
Another killing ground
The days are filled with darkness
With dying all around
The nights go on forever
Just waiting on the sun
A new day, a new battle
A fight that can’t be won

Freedom isn’t free they say
The gain is worth the cost
That depends on who is counting
And what they may have lost
A candle in the window
A ribbon in the yard
A single flag-draped coffin
The loss hits home so hard

Chorus

It’s just another battlefield
Another killing ground
The days are filled with darkness
With dying all around
The nights go on forever
Just waiting on the sun
A new day, a new battle
A fight that can’t be won

We heard all of their reasons
We listened to their lies
We measured all their actions
And cut them down to size
The truth has always been here
As plain as it can be
Killing never leads to peace
As any fool can see

Chorus

It’s just another battlefield
Another killing ground
The days are filled with darkness
With dying all around
The nights go on forever
Just waiting on the sun
A new day, a new battle
A fight that can’t be won

Jigsaw

Who you are is what you are
And how you are is why
When you care is where you are
Whatever way you try
If you use a thousand buts
Or look for easy outs
Everywhere you hide you’ll be
Revealed by all your doubts
Anyone you turn to
Can just simply turn away
Leaving you alone again
With nothing left to say
All the time regretting
All the sometimes you forgot
Everything important
In the end you find is not
