Mourning Still

I should just on with living
But there’s so much in the way
Haunted by the ghosts of memories
That are with me every day
And I cannot see tomorrow
Blinded by these falling tears
So, nothing ever changes
With the passing of the years
Happiness is only sadness
When it lives just in the past
Trying to hold on to something
That you pray will somehow last
For tomorrow brings a dawning
That could lift me with its light
But I’m stuck here in this darkness
I can only see tonight
Still mourning all the losses
In a world turned cold and grey
Hanging from these matchstick crosses
Finding nothing left to say
They say time waits for no man
But tonight it’s standing still
With the weight of all this sorrow
And a hole that can’t be filled

Final Journey

For all the things me eyes have seen
The cards that I’ve been dealt
For all the smiles and laughter
And all the pain I’ve felt
Well, I know it’s not my first time
On this journey through the past
So much is happening again
This time may be my last

An old soul’s traveled many miles
Born with a broken heart
A heart without protection
Defenseless from the start
Where any story in the news
Brings teardrops to my eyes
Learning from my failures
But never feeling wise

Aware that time is fleeting
The end is drawing near
Smiling at the finish line
And free from all the fears
With a light from all the bridges
Still burning in my past
This journey isn’t over
But it will be my last

Dawn 9/22/2012

A new day is dawning
As the morning’s first light
Brightens the shadows
Of a sleepless night
Was it something imagined
Or was it a dream
From a time and a place
Where things aren’t what they seem
There’s a restless sinner
With the soul of a saint
There’s an empty canvass
Just waiting for paint
There’s a song in my head
There’s a hole in the moon
And lyrics unwritten
Awaiting a tune
The smell of fresh coffee
And hope everywhere
There’s a hungry heart waiting
For someone who cares
The headlines are crying
With stories that weep
There’s a part of me dying
For the comfort of sleep

My Companion

Well, I’m not sure where it came from
Don’t know where it’s going to end
But the road that I am traveling
Sure is easier with a friend
I have taken some bad detours
And at times I’ve lost my way
I’ve survived some stormy weather
But I’m standing still today
I’ve been hurt and I’ve hurt others
I’ve been angry and unkind
I’ve ignored the light before me
When there was no peace of mind
For all the roads that I have traveled
Searching for my point of view
Every roadblock, every valley
Always leads me back to you
From the start of all my travels
Till the road comes to an end
I am better for the journey
Walking with my dearest friend
For the road can break the pilgrim
Even if the heart is true
But it’s worth the pain and hardships
If I travel it with you

The Have Nots

They are standing in the shadows
Trying desperately to hide
Afraid the light of day will show
The pain locked up inside
Feelings they cannot explain
Or even understand
To blind to see the stranger
Who might lend a helping hand
Some seem born to live with less
And barely make it by
Living lives of desperation
From the cradle till they die
While others live in luxury
From the moment of their birth
Thinking all they can amass
Is the true measure of their worth
But some are born with caring souls
That cannot be bought or sold
Knowing all the riches in this world
Are not worth a heart of gold
That kind of wealth increases
Multiplied each time you share
The gift received by giving
Is the reward for those who care
So, step into the shadows
To that soul lost in the night
For you just may be their angel
Sent to share your own soul’s light
And when the day may come
That you are lost and all alone
You’ll be rescued from the darkness
By an angel of your own

Songbird (For Wendy)

Pick up that guitar of yours
And open up a vein
Sing a song to soothe my soul
And wash away my pain
Let me hear your lilting voice
Straight from your heart so pure
Messages of hope and love
And strength that will endure
Lift my spirit on the breeze
Like weeds blown by the wind
A peaceful respite for my soul
To help the spirit mend
Sing your song, sweet troubadour
And let your voice be heard
Let me find inspiration
In every single word
Sing to me of feelings shared
That last until the end
A song forever in my heart
The song of my dear friend

Open Veins and Bleeding Hearts

It’s a choice to pay attention
And a calling for the few
Who never lose their inner light
Or change their point of view
With passion and compassion
And a heart forever pure
With scars that will not fade with time
From pain they have endured
But they still find some comfort
Every time a teardrop starts
With a truth that’s worth believing
Open veins and bleeding hearts

Bleeding hearts feel all the sorrow
In a world grown dark and cold
Never hiding from those feelings
Rarely doing what they’re told
Unafraid to share their feelings
Never buckling from the strain
Writing songs about injustice
As they open up a vein

Many people choose to tune out
As the world keeps turning ‘round
All the hatred and the hunger
All the blood spilled on the ground
Where the wounded and the dying
Are so very far away
And the little children crying
Are not mentioned when they pray
Still the singer tells their story
Feeling every single part
Trying to touch another pilgrim
Open veins and bleeding hearts

Love

You can fear a hell below us
You can pray to God above
But you’ll never know life’s purpose
If you’re living without love
You can live your life inside yourself
With nothing to be shared
But what will you have gained
If no one ever knows you cared
You can climb the highest mountain
You can raise your voice and sing
But your heart’s an empty vessel
Without the joy that love can bring
Because love is exponential
So, if you really want to live
The love you get will multiply
For all the love you give

My Pledge of Allegiance

I pledge allegiance to myself
And all that I believe
To everyone who died in vain
To loved ones who still grieve
I pledge allegiance to the poor
To those who live in need
To fight against the status quo
One nation under greed
I pledge to fight injustice
And for equality
Until we are that shining light
And everyone is free
I pledge to not be silenced
By those who disagree
The path of least resistance
Is not the road for me
I pledge to never compromise
From all I know is right
To rise above the darkness
Until all live in the light
Until no child goes hungry
Until we share the wealth
Until all people live in peace
I pledge this to myself
