The Good Fight

The world is turning backwards

And time stands worse than still

The ignorance is stifling

And trying to break my will

Mama would just sit and cry

At all the ground we've lost

A mockery of those who fought

And paid that heavy cost

But we can't let the dream just die

And let those bastards win

The Devil's in the details

That documents their sins

See, ignorance dies slowly

And rears its ugly head

So, don't give up the struggle

Until we know it's dead

I know I won't live long enough

To see that precious sight

Where people all stand equal

And all walk in the light

Come march right here beside me

For things worth fighting for

So, we can leave behind a world

That's worth a little more

The Love They Left Behind

The hardest part of growing older

Is the holes nothing can fill

The ones we love that slipped away

We miss and always will

But take time to remember

The joy they shared with you

See, nothing lasts forever

So, here's what you can do

Celebrate the memories

And hold them in your mind

Much greater than their absence

Is the love they left behind

The lessons and the laughter

You shared along the way

The bitter sting of losing them

A worthy price to pay

So, smile the smile they shared with you

Remember to be kind

And share with everyone you can

The love they left behind

Minutes Before Midnight

 Minutes before midnight

I could see the full moon’s light

Shining through the window

Glimmering in the night

And there, the fairest silhouette

This shadow next to me

The one who taught my soul to love

And taught these eyes to see

The beauty hidden in her soul

The smile that lights my way

The way she looks inside my heart

And brightens every day

That’s why I pledged a vow to her

One I will always keep

But minutes before midnight

I’ll just hold her while she sleeps

PR9s

 The encore is over

They've turned out the lights

No more tomorrows

No more "good nights"

The melody faded

There's only the beat

But even it's making

Its way down the street

Photographs faded

In books on a shelf

Lost in these memories

Here by myself

Years pass like days

And so much gets lost

Wearing these scars

From paying the cost

These holes left behind

That nothing can fill

The hurt that consumed you

Is haunting me still

So here's to you, brother

Tell Mama hello

Your love lives inside me

Wherever I go

The Power of Your Love

You walked into my life

A smiling vision from the past

When everything was growing dim

The light was fading fast

And hope was such a stranger

In this heart that had grown cold

A future filled with loneliness

A fear of growing old

I'd lost the one who sheltered me

In need of a good friend

You smiled and wiped my tears away

And helped my heart to mend

As time moved on, we realized

A love we'd never known

And standing at that altar

Knew we'd never be alone

Still, in the time of painful loss

You slip your hand in mine

No matter what pain life may bring

You heal me every time

My Angel and my one true love

The comfort for my soul

Your touch can wipe the tears away

Your love can make me whole

Taking Flight

It took so long for me to fly

So long to find these wings

Bound to my own failures

And shackled by those rings

The caged bird sings a lonely tune

That no one hears at night

Dreaming of a sunlit sky

And flying to the light

They sold me limitations

That were never meant for me

Afraid I might find freedom

And all that I could be

Then, one day it was opened

An unattended door

And I attempted my first flight

In search of something more

But I found freedom in a heart

That kept me safe and warm

Nesting here and holding you

Inside my loving arms

My Someone

Nothing I had known before
Prepared me for her heart
And I'd never known the kindness
That she showed me from the start
No one lights a fire in me
Like when I feel her touch
When the world seems cold and lonely
I need that flame so much
No eyes ever looked in mine
And made me feel this way
I'm rarely at a loss for words
But I find it hard to say
How much this woman means to me
How much she's changed my life
My one true grand companion
My lover and my wife
So many years I stumbled down
A path that led nowhere
So many days spent searching for
Someone who really cares
But no one ever matched the dreams
Of the Angel in my head
Thinking she could not be real
And settling instead
Until I met my someone
And I found a love so new
Waking up to more than any
Dream that could come true
For there is no one like my someone
No other smiling face
Could light my world of darkness
Now no one can take her place
So, I will spend my days with her
As long as I shall live
Because no one else could ever match
The love my someone gives
