The Fifth Commandment

The wrong way is the easy choice
For those who just don't care
To speak for those who have no voice
Pretend you're unaware
Of how their world is changing
Their minds just slip away
You just aren't rearranging
Any hours in your day
You care too much about yourself
To face the painful truth
And so you place them on a shelf
Like you can't see the proof
That one who sacrificed for you
Now needs your helping hand
Ignoring what you know is true
Too weak to make a stand
So, they will fade, then disappear
You'll try hard to forget
How you abandoned one so dear
You'll live with that regret

My Valentine

I could buy a million roses
And write poems every day
I could talk until I lose my voice
And still have more to say
No card could ever quite describe
This joy I’ve found with you
The love I see in your brown eyes
The dreams you’ve made come true
My comfort, my companion
My lover, my best friend
I will always be beside you
From this day until the end
For all the love you’ve given me
The tears you’ve wiped away
For all the laughter we have shared
For every wondrous day
You see, I owe my life to you
I don’t know where to start
To pay for all you’ve given me
I simply give my heart
So, slip your hand inside of mine
And let me see that smile
And walk with me in love’s sweet light
Each day and every mile

Words (For Norma Lynn)

I'm rarely at a loss for words
But it seems so hard to say
The way you changed my lonely life
In almost every way
I always feared the future
And was haunted by my past
Until that elusive Angel
Filled this heart with love at last
For love was just a fantasy
A glimpse in sleepless dreams
In quiet corners of my mind
Where nothing's as it seems
Until you walked into my life
And took my tired heart
And cradled it with your sweet love
Right from the very start
The depth of love you give to me
So few could comprehend
Sweet comforting companion
My lover and best friend
But still I struggle trying to put
These feelings down in rhyme
Know you're my one and only love
Until the end of time

Unfinished Business

There's a fight that's still worth fighting
There is work left to be done
There's a distance to be traveled
Before our race is run
There's business to be finished
And mountains still to climb
With promises that must be kept
We're running out of time
Where every man and woman
Lives equal in this land
And wealth is something we all share
It's time to take a stand
If you're waiting on some sort of sign
Start looking all around
The tide has turned against us
And washed away the ground
Where brave souls stood before us
Who paid a heavy price
For the freedoms disappearing
Wasting all their sacrifice
So, come and stand beside me
Hand in hand and heart to heart
Our strength is in each other
As it has been from the start

One More Time

One more time to see your face
To hear your laughter fill this space
One more chance to hear your voice
To try to change that fateful choice
A few more words to let you know
How all my life I loved you so
One more night to wonder why
The last time was our last goodbye

Trumpty Dumpty

Trumpty Dumpty wanted a wall
Saying it was the best thing for us all
A thinly veiled ruse to cover his plan
To make rich folks richer as fast as he can
Trumpty Dumpty, the combover kid
A con man who lied about all that he did
He scorns all our allies, makes friends with our foes
Arrogantly lying where ever he goes
Ignoring subpoenas for crime after crime
Believing a leader could never do time
Paying off porn stars and hiding his taxes
While secretly building his own evil axis
But election day's coming and bringing its tolls
The guilty will pay if we all pack the polls
I hope that his sentence ranks up with the worst
Unless Nancy Pelosi impeaches him first
Trumpty Dumpty, your time is at hand
To pay for the damage you've done to our land
And history will tell of your treasonous crimes
Recording the truth of these difficult times
For no one is bigger than the people, you see
No room for tyrants in the land of the free

For Philip

Sweet little boy with those yellow-green eyes
Blonde hair and that cute dimpled chin
I've got a half-century of memories to share
But I'm not sure just where to begin
I didn't know what I was missing
Until I laid eyes on your face
Part son and part brother, a part of my soul
That nothing can ever replace
So, I'm looking for rhymes with some reasons
Not sure where to start or to end
Love never dies, but I know in this life
That I'll never see you again
All around me the world doesn't notice
That everything's been rearranged
But they can't see the pain or the hole in my heart
That my world is forever changed
