Taking Flight

It took so long for me to fly

So long to find these wings

Bound to my own failures

And shackled by those rings

The caged bird sings a lonely tune

That no one hears at night

Dreaming of a sunlit sky

And flying to the light

They sold me limitations

That were never meant for me

Afraid I might find freedom

And all that I could be

Then, one day it was opened

An unattended door

And I attempted my first flight

In search of something more

But I found freedom in a heart

That kept me safe and warm

Nesting here and holding you

Inside my loving arms

My Someone

Nothing I had known before
Prepared me for her heart
And I'd never known the kindness
That she showed me from the start
No one lights a fire in me
Like when I feel her touch
When the world seems cold and lonely
I need that flame so much
No eyes ever looked in mine
And made me feel this way
I'm rarely at a loss for words
But I find it hard to say
How much this woman means to me
How much she's changed my life
My one true grand companion
My lover and my wife
So many years I stumbled down
A path that led nowhere
So many days spent searching for
Someone who really cares
But no one ever matched the dreams
Of the Angel in my head
Thinking she could not be real
And settling instead
Until I met my someone
And I found a love so new
Waking up to more than any
Dream that could come true
For there is no one like my someone
No other smiling face
Could light my world of darkness
Now no one can take her place
So, I will spend my days with her
As long as I shall live
Because no one else could ever match
The love my someone gives

Sauvignon Ramble

It’s as bad as you make it
It’s as good as it gets
You live like you’re dying
And leave no regrets
It is what it isn’t
You are what you ain’t
You’re never all sinner
Nobody’s a saint
The way it it all started
The way it all ends
Nothing much matters
Except a few friends
Now, I see you’re dressed up
In your bows and your sashes
 Laughter to memories
Tears turn to ashes

The Hours Before Dawn

Sometimes in the hours before dawn
I wake up to the words of some old song
And think of childhood memories and laughter
And how you always used to always sing along
Sometimes in the hours before dawn
I find you in a vision or some dream
Some place where you are safe from all the sorrow
Where everything is simply as it seems
Sometimes when I'm half awake and dreaming
I hear your laughter and I call your name
Remembering the happiness you brought me
And knowing life cannot be quite the same
Sometimes before dawn, there is a sadness
That through my waking hours, lingers on
But my love for you forever shines immortal
Sometimes in the hours before dawn

One Year

One year ago today
She made my wildest dreams come true
By telling me "you've worn me down"
And "I'm in love with you"
She didn't realize how long
She'd been the only love for me
The love I thought was obvious
She somehow couldn't see
I didn't want to scare her off
The stakes were much too high
Her friendship was too much to lose
So, I could never try
To tell her all I felt inside
And how she touched my soul
And how her smile could light my world
And make my spirit whole
But now it's one year down the road

Before Dawn

In the early morning hours
Long before the day’s first light
Thoughts left over from a dream
Another sleepless night
Fading like a photograph
You kept for all these years
Trying to see clearly
But blinded by your tears
Searching for some meaning
Reasons to explain
What you cannot understand
Efforts all in vain
Coffee for the cobwebs
As your day begins to start
Love survives when all else dies
Safely inside your heart

The Struggle

You can bet your bottom dollar
You can try until your death
You can talk until your face turns blue
But you'll only waste your breath
Cause some folks only see the things
That we can both see through
And all the explanations
Cannot change their points of view
Some folks live with hatred
While some folks live with fear
Scared to open up their minds
Afraid of what they'll hear
Me, I sit here on this porch
And watch the world go by
Knowing what we could have been
Will haunt me 'til I die
Mama said that everyone
Does the best that they can do
And while I admired her wisdom
I'm not so sure that's true
Some folks live for only greed
The truth is plain to see
But our hope is in each other
And the love in you and me
